Picton
Scout District covers
the Liverpool districts of Netherley,
Belle Vale, Childwall, Wavertree, Edge
Hill, Princes Park, Toxteth,
and the City Centre, spreading occasionally into Everton to the north and Mossley
Hill to the south.
WHAT IS PICTON?
Scouting-wise, Picton is one of 15 Districts that make up Merseyside County. In our District we have many active Groups providing Scouting activities for young people aged 6 to 14. We also have two Explorer Units covering the 14 to 18 age range, and a Scout Network section (part of the County Scout Network and run jointly with Allerton and Fairfield District) for the 18 to 25 age range. Other parts of this website have more information about the Sections we run, and the Groups that run them.
WHY 'PICTON'?
Picton District was formed in 1974 when the City Borough of Liverpool in the county of Lancashire became the City of Liverpool in the newly created county of Merseyside. Many of the old Districts were amalgamated to form new districts, and as such a new name was required. The name 'Picton' comes from Sir James Allanson Picton who was a prominant member of the Liverpool Town Council and the Wavertree Local Board of Health. He moved to Wavertree in 1848 where he'd designed and built his own house. He was Chairman of the Libraries Committee for nearly forty years, and in 1879 the Picton Reading Room in the Central Library was named after him as a mark of respect. Also in 1879, Sir James' wife Sarah died after fifty years of marriage, and five years later he presented to the people of Wavertree a clock tower as a memorial to his late wife.
If you are intereted in the history of Wavertree, Picton, and the surrounding area then you can contact The Wavertree Society - details on their website. |
